Chapter 4 - Forever

"Alrighty. Right there you can see the head," the nurse pointed out." Maka gasped. She could hardly believe there truly was a little person inside her. Soul smiled as he held Maka's hand gently.

"It's so cute," Maka whispered.

"Would you like to know the gender?" the technician asked. Maka and Soul starred at each other and knew what the other was thinking.

"I think we want it to be a surprise," Maka told her.

"Alright then. Your in your 2nd trimester, near your 3rd, and you seem to be coming along well so far. If anything comes up be sure to contact the doctor. You may go now," the nurse told her when the ultrasound was done. Maka and Soul walked out of the hospital and Soul was about to call a cab(since he didn't want Maka to ride on his motorcycle) when Maka stopped him, saying she wanted to walk.

"Are you sure? You'll get tired!" Soul scolded.

"It's not that far off. Besides, it'll only be a few more weeks before I'm on bed-rest… So too bad," Maka said with a smirk. Soul rolled his eyes, he knew she was stubborn, so he took Maka's hand, and began to stroll towards their house.

"Have you thought of names yet?" Maka asked. He tilted his head.

"Not really. Have you?"

"Well I've thought of a few… What about Dawn, Elda, Camille, and Evelyn for a girl? And then Mika and Jude can be used for a boy or girl. What do you think? That's all the names I can think of."

"Uh… I'm not really sure. Maybe when we see it we'll know," Soul said philosophically.

"Hmmm… Good point. The baby shower is coming up too," Maka stated as-a-matter-of-factly.

"Yeah?" Soul answered.

"I've been thinking… Do you think it'd be better to be married before we have the baby?" Maka asked, completely unsure of what her answer would be. Soul starred at her blankly.

"What do you mean?"

"I donnow I kinda just wanna be married before we have our child. It'd make me feel better that way. I mean there's no way I would wear a wedding dress now… but do you think we could get married legally then have the ceremony after the birth?" Maka asked inquisitively. Soul gave her a slightly confused look, which after transformed into an optimistic one.

"Sure… I mean if that's what you want… it's cool." A smile grew on Maka's face.

"Thanks, Soul," she said, rubbing her tummy. "Are you excited?... About all this?"

"You know… it's almost so much that I'm not sure what to think of it. I don't think it's all sank in yet."

"Are you nervous about being a father," Maka asked, unsure of the answer she would receive.

"Maybe a little… What... What if it's scared of me?" Soul asked. Maka's eyes grew.

"Your it's father! Of course it wouldn't be scared of you! I mean... just look at me! There's no way I'm scarred of you! And... and all our friends! They aren't scarred of you!" Maka said, her voice rising.

"Even so... It's a possibility... I guess I'll have to be the least bit scary as possible... But I know I'll also have you there... Somehow We'll make it through," Soul said, looking deeply into her eyes. Maka's face melted into a smile.

"You'll always have me."

Maka invited many people to the baby shower. She invited Liz, Patty, Tsubaki, Chrona, and Blaire decided to come and help with the games. After everyone had arrived they decided to start with the games. The first game was that everyone had blindfolds on while Blaire passed along diapers filled with various things. Liz was disgusted by every diaper. Patty giggled at each scent. Tsubaki tried to figure out each one. Chrona wasn't sure what to do. And Maka didn't get to smell one before there were two familiar hands placed on her shoulders.

"Maka honey, congratulations, dear," said the mysterious woman. Maka undid her blindfold and turned around to be greeted by her mother's sweet, familiar face. Maka hugged her mother as her mother hugged her back. She snuggled her face into her face into her shoulder and could feel a few tears begin to brim her face.

"Mom, it's been so long!" Maka whispered into her mother's shoulder.

"Well, I caught wind of what happened and couldn't bear to miss seeing you and my grandchild," Her mother said, pulling away from Maka. "I'm afraid I really can't stay for long, but I'm going to give you my number so when you have your baby you give me a call and I'll rush over, but it's crucial you do it for no other reason. I'm on big business, Maka, and I had to pull quite a few strings just to get here right now." Maka hugged her mother again. Her short, curly blonde hair tickling her forehead. Her voice was soothing and her eyes were the reflection of her own.

"But you just got here!" Maka accused, sounding like a child. Her mother pulled away.

"You have enough courage to deal with without me," her mother said pulling away, then looking down at Maka's half-way swollen stomach. Her mother smiled. "I believe someone is between us. Next time I come I'll be able to see you," she said, placing her hand on Maka's stomach. She looked back up at Maka, "I'll see you soon. Stay strong," she said, and left, but not before she gave Maka her number. After seeing her mother she felt as if her mother truly had given her even more courage and strength.

After the games they decided to have the cake. On the cake there were the words: "Congratulations Maka!" written in rainbow colors. The cake was decorated with colorful baby items and a baby on the front. The cake mix was marble.

"It tastes really good!" Someone said, along with others saying basically the same thing.

Afterwards Maka opened her presents. She received diapers, baby toys, a stroller, a car seat, and the big one that she saved for last was a crib that everyone pitched in to buy.

"Oh gosh guys! Thanks so much!" Maka said, truly grateful.

"Hey, Maka, do you know if the baby is a boy or girl yet?"

"Where is the baby gonna sleep?"

"When's the wedding?" Various people asked.

"No we want to keep it a surprise. It's going to take my old bedroom. And there's actually something I wanted to mention. Soul and I are actually going to get legally married before we have the baby. I just kinda wanted to be married before I had my first kid… So… yeah! But after the baby is born we're going to have a proper reception," Maka stated.

"That's great, Maka!" Everyone said.

---A few minutes after getting legally married-outside the building they signed the papers in---

Outside the building they were directly in front of the Death City Fountain. They held each other's hands and looked deeply into each other's eyes.

"I love you."

"I love you, too."

"Will you take care of me?"

"Forever."

"… This... This is real... isn't it…?"

"It's cool. We'll have each other forever now."
